Summer League: May 21 2009

This week was about the same as the three that came before it for me. I am still yet to break the 600 barrier, which is REALLY frustrating, because I’m not far off of it.  In fact it’s been a matter of just a single missed spare in one or two games.  This week it was a matter of three missed spares in the last game.  But, I digress.

Roger managed to roll his third 700 in a row with a 725 scratch series and he’s now carrying a whopping 232 average, which means no handicap for him. Ron and I are dragging the line with our lowly 190 and 194 respective averages.  So far, I’m satisfied with how I’m performing because I’m not the weak link on the team. I don’t think there really is a weak link on the team.  Ron and I are rolling about the same kind of game, while Roger is in a league of his own.  I’m hoping that come the Fall league in August/September of this year, I will be rolling at least a mid 600 series every week, with the occasional 700 series.  For the moment at least, I’m happy with the way things are progressing. Goals are set and looking very much within reach for the moment.

Okay.  So this week I started the night with a bang by opening with the front six, giving me a guaranteed 180 halfway through the game.  Unfortunately, I followed that up with three open frames in the last four, so what could have been a mid 200 game, became a 214. Roger went absolutely nuts and opened up with a 279.  He threw 10 in a row, sparing in the first and missing the fill shot in the tenth.

Second game: This game I switched balls for the first few shots because the last few shots in the first game were coming in really high, but after the first two frames, realised that I had subsequently picked up speed a little so the ball change had became some what useless because the ball was just pushing too long. After I figured that out, I switched back to the Arch Rival, kept the same line and found the pocket all over again.  This game, I didn’t get a decent string of strikes together, but I managed to get enough of them overall to finish with a 210. So far so good.

The third game came completely off the wagon. I opened the first and third frames, missing simple 6 and 7 pins respectively. I get really agitated at myself when I miss single pin spares. Generally speaking, when you leave a single pin spare, you’ve thrown a pretty good shot with your first ball, then to miss a simple single pin spare simply renders the first shot useless. Not only that, you lose AT LEAST 10 pins in total count. Needless to say, when you litter a game with open frames, you can pretty much kiss a decent game goodbye. I was sitting pretty for my first 600 of the league needing just 176 pins in the last game. Thanks to those first two opens and another one late in the game, I came up just 16 pins short for 160. That’s just two open frames. To add insult to injury, I left a 6-7 split with the first ball of the tenth frame, which I actually picked up. I missed the easy spares early, only to pick up one of the toughest in the game at the end.

I finished the night with a 584, just 16 pins shy of the 600 series. So close and yet so far. That being said, every week I’m bowling pretty much the same series, which is good. Consistency is better than getting a mid to high 600 one week and following it up with a low 500 or worse the following week, so its not all bad. I’m happy to carrying a 194 average for the moment, but I would definitely like to push that over the 200 threshold, but I have to be patient and work towards it. I can’t help but be a little impatient because everything else seems to have come so quickly, I kinda expect the rest to follow. But one step at a time…
