Job interview update

On Tuesday, October 6, 2009, we traveled to Lexington, KY for a couple of job interviews, including one for Bankers Life and Casualty Company.

Just a week before, 24 hours after posting my resume to CareerBuilder.com, I was contacted by someone from Bankers saying they had reviewed my resume, were very impressed and invited me to an interview the following Tuesday. Now, I might not have done the job application process in its entirety before, but my assumption was that if I had posted my Resume under the title of “Experienced Senior Web Developer”, then the only people “reviewing” my resume would be those looking for an “Experienced Senior Web Developer.” A pretty safe assumption, wouldn’t you say?

I couldn’t have been more wrong. I showed up to the “job interview”, after spending some $60 on a new shirt and a new pair of shoes so I was presentable for the interview. As I walked in, I was handed a small folder with some stuff in it. I walk in to the interview room and realize I’m in a room with about 15 more people sitting at small tables. At this point I’m thinking “Hmmm? Okay, maybe they will do a quick intro then split us up in to groups by position and interview us properly.” That moment never came. I sat there for two hours while the Branch Sales Manager told us his “inspirational” story about his meteoric rise within Bankers, while he showed us slide after slide illustrating how much money we could make (6 figures, might I add…) if we only had the drive and willingness to “work hard”. I had inadvertently been tricked in to attending an insurance agent recruitment drive. I have now and never will be interested in selling insurance to anyone. Why? Because I don’t have the personality type or the drive to do that much leg work in hopes of “helping” people.

To make things worse, after walking outside and telling Jennifer what had happened, I was promptly berated for not asking was the position was in the first place. Again, I never thought I would be “scouted” by anybody, other than development companies, so the thought to inquire about the position never crossed my mind.

So after a short argument on a busy Lexington road, we decided to head to Jaime’s house, which is just 20 minutes away in Richmond, KY. When we get there I quickly find the number for the second interview I had organized for the day. Thankfully, he was happy to do either a phone interview or a face to face interview. So we did a 15 minute phone interview and that was that. He told me he would get back to me within a week or so to let me know if I had made through to the next round of interviews. The major bonus of this position is that I could potentially work from home, which is always an attractive option. So here’s hoping that works out.

At this point, the FNS situation is still unclear. I would have thought that since I’ve been contracting to them for a little over 8 weeks that I would be the first pick of the litter, but it appears that is not the case. I’m hoping to interview for the position over the next week or so. All going well, both the FNS position and the telecommuting position will resolve at about the same time and I can take my pick, but for now its a waiting game.
