Thursday League: March 5, 2009

This Thursday was by far my most successful league night. After recently breaking the 600 series a few weeks ago, I thought I had probably peaked for the season.  Well, I was wrong.  Last night I bowled my first 700, and what a 700 it was!

I started the night out with 219, which I was very happy about. I usually start with anything from 170 to 190, so a 219 was a great start. I missed a couple of single pin spares, so I think I really need to start working on that stuff.  I did manage to pick up a 3-10 split with a straight ball, which made me happy. I’m doing pretty well hitting all the right hand spares.  Ironically, I’m more confident shooting a 10 pin than I am shooting a 3 pin.  Go figure.  I’m really struggling to shoot straight at anything on the left, however, so most of practise sessions in the coming weeks are going to focus on shooting the left hand spares.

The next game was a 258, even with a gutter ball after a spare. I felt dialled in and very relaxed. From the moment I picked up my ball from the ball return, I felt relaxed and super focussed. I was in the zone. Every shot followed the same routine:

  1. Pick up the ball and get a comfortable feel on my hand
  2. Position my hand so my index is pointing at the 10 pin
  3. Sight my target, relax and breath out.
  4. And go…

My last game was a 256, which rounded the night out with a 733. Tonight was the first time I had real confidence in my shot BEFORE I started my approach.  Usually, I feel uncertain of my shot until it’s about 40 feet down the lane, sometimes not even then!

It was a good feeling to get that milestone out of the way. I thought it would take me at least another season or so, before I would manage that so I’m very happy with my progress this season.

I now have three major goals left:

  1. Bowl a 300 game
  2. Bowl an 800 series
  3. Become a PBA member

For the moment, I’m wanna take my time on the third item, but hopefully it won’t be too much longer. 😉 Watch this space…
