Ah, the first snow of the season

Seeing as I’m originally from a slightly more temperate region of the globe, waking up to find a fresh blanket of snow on the lawn is still both very strange and very exciting. I love that you go to bed seeing what would ordinarily be out your window and wake in the morning to a beautiful scene that is breathtaking and really quite amazing. My only complaint would be that its just too cold!

So a couple of days ago, that was exactly the scenario facing me when I woke up and it was still snowing. It still seems weird to be close to Christmas and not thinking about going to the beach and maybe playing some volleyball, but seeing snow everywhere really does make you think about Christmas, all thanks to the many US Christmas movies that get broadcast to New Zealand, I suspect.

I let Lilyana outside for little while to play in the snow a little before her “Pappaw” Bill (that’s Granddad or Koro for you kiwi’s reading this) and his girlfriend Brenda came to pick her up. We don’t have a full snow suit for her yet, or mittens, so I was a little hesitant to let her just go nuts in the snow, but I wanted her to at least get to stomp around in it, and stomp she did. What was once nice clean snow on the front deck soon became a slushy mess under her feet, but she loved it. She even tried to pick it up a few times, but soon thought better of it after she realised her hands were getting cold. I only wish that I’d had a camera with charged batteries with me. That would have made for some great keep sakes.

The only grip about the whole snow thing, is that our water pipes froze up a  over night a couple days ago, so we were without running water for half the day. We got the thawed out late in the afternoon and things have been sweet since.

Jennifer was saying it was sleeting this morning while she was having her morning cigarette and that we’re expecting a snow storm sometime today, but I’ve not seen an sleet as yet. It is looking a little gloomy out, so the snow storm is a very real possibility, but only time will tell.
