Updates from Hazard, KY

It’s been quite some time since my last post, but much has happened in that time. By far the biggest news is Lilyana is now a year old and walking around, making life a whole lot more difficult for Jennifer and I. Unfortunately, she has inherited our penchant for wanting to examine everything we come across, only to discard once its use has been filled. I swear she moves from one thing to the next so quickly, it’s hard for us to keep up with her. We’re constantly taking stuff off her, only to have her fix her gaze on something else.  She certainly wears my patience thin at times, but I’m trying to learn how to be more patient, at least with her and Jennifer. Only Jennifer can tell you how well I’m faring in that pursuit.

At the moment, I’m working for Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing (FSMFN) as a contract developer. I’ve been working over there for about three weeks already. I was contracted on for three days a week from June 29th, 2009 (Lilyana’s Birthday) through July 24th, 2009. As it turns out, however, the way the contract is worded, I can actually work as much as I like. A fact I’m taking full advantage of as we speak! 🙂 They have a set up that allows me to connect to the machine I work on in the office from home. So, I’ve taken advantage of that a little over the last two weeks.

I was specifically contracted to rewrite a custom module from their previous online education system to make it work on their new online education system. As it turns out, they got me to write another piece of custom software, again integrated with their new system, that has sucked up half my time there already, so I’m having to really stick to the grind to get the other piece out of the way.  At the moment, I’m looking a little doubtful, but I’m gonna do what I can to make sure I get there.  We’ll see how it goes.
The final piece of news is that I’m actually singing at a wedding tomorrow afternoon. The guy who actually gave me the job at FSMFN is getting married and after hanging out a couple times he realized I could sing a little, so asked if I’d mind singing at his wedding. I yes, but I’m a little nervous. It’s been about 4 years since I last performed anywhere, I haven’t played a guitar very often in the last two years, and my voice is still very temperamental, so I’m just hoping I can bluff my way through it. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow I guess.  I’ll be singing Daughters by John Mayer and a song I wrote about five years ago for a friends wedding back in New Zealand, Living out a dream.
