Well, in the last week things have changed a little as far as work prospects go. Last Sunday, I went bowling and for the first time in a long time, the owner, Fred, was working the counter. What’s more, Jennifer had dropped me off to go and get in the tanning bed for a little while, which meant I was there by myself to bowl for an hour, after which I would just wait until Jennifer came back from the tanning salon.
So, after I bowled five games on horribly dry lanes, I decided to have a chat with Fred while I waited for my wife to return. Somewhere in the conversation, I mentioned to him that I would be interested in learning how to run a bowling alley, as well as how to drill bowling balls. As it turns out, one of his employees had quit just the night before, a fact I found out some three days later. I don’t know the particulars, and don’t really want to know the particulars, but this has opened up a possibility that I might get a job at the bowling alley. This is a step in the right direction toward eventually owning and operating at a bowling center of my own one day.
At this point, everything is still up in the air, so nothing is set in stone, but its an exciting possibility, because this could mean I can bowl for free, which is a great advantage when you’re trying to hone your skills as fast as you can. I’m uncertain as to whether I want to work more than say 20 hours over the week, but if the price is right, I certainly wouldn’t turn down a full time job. Having said that, I doubt the price will be right, considering the current state of the economy and the fact that most places around here pay minimum wage, which is a paltry $6 per hour, before tax.
Anyway, I’m quietly crossing my fingers that I will get a job of some sort, or even be able to go over and shadow Fred for a few days a week (sans payment) just to learn what goes on behind the scenes at a bowling alley. I’m definitely way more interested in the prospect of learning how fit and drill a ball, but at this point, I’ll take whatever I can get. If I get a job, that’s at least a little more financial stability for my family which is a huge thing in the slim pickings of the US economy, and indeed the global economy.
