Christmas Eve ’08

Well, today has been a rather uneventful day.  As mentioned in a previous post, our car is somewhat broken at the moment, after having the front-right CV joint break, rendering the car immobile.  As it turns out, the car has a large hex bolt in the front axle, surrounded by six 12-sided bolts.  Bloody German engineering!

Anyway, Jennifer ended up spending the whole day down at the store so Bill could ‘work’ on the car, which apparently didn’t happen as much as we had expected.  To top things off, Jennifer couldn’t get the last of her Christmas shopping done because we didn’t have a car and we didn’t have enough money to do it in the end. The end result: our non-attendance at the Colwell Family dinner at Grandma Colwell’s place.  I’m sure there will be plenty of rumor and chatter surrounding the reasons.

Jaime and her brood made it down for the day.  This was an unexpected surprise as we had been told they weren’t going to make it down at all, because Stevie had to work.  It was nice to see the kids having fun and playing with each and the gifts they’d just received.  Not to forget, its always nice to chill with the family for a little while.

We ended up giving a couple of small things to a young boy Jennifer met at Bill and Mary’s (aunt and uncle) house who apparently was told by his parents that Santa wasn’t coming and wasn’t going to receive a single gift, of any sort.  We felt sorry for him because he was there while Jennifer was delivering a few gifts for Star and Autumn, and decided to give him something to lift his spirits a little.

At this point, Christmas day proper is looking like it’s going to be a non-event.  Oh well.  Christmas is now so overwhelmingly commercial and a classic example of keeping up with the Jones’s, that the fun, and indeed the very spirit of Christmas, is somewhat lost.
