LOL! We had planned to travel to Newport, KY for a coaching clinic up there. While we were there we intended to buy a new ball for Jennifer and fix a couple of my balls.

The clinic was on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th of June. As it turned out, our nephew, Matthew, had his 8th grade graduation in Richmond which is about an hour and 20 south of Newport. So, we decided we would head up for that and stay with Jennifer’s sister, Jaime, for the night and head out early in the morning for Newport. It sounded like a solid plan. Little did we know…

So, despite our best efforts, we didn’t get out of Hazard until 5pm. Matthew’s graduation started at 6pm. We got into to Richmond at about 7.30pm and called Jaime. She informed us that the graduation ceremony was over and said we could just meet them at O’Charley’s and we could have dinner. We had a great dinner with Jaime and her kids. We had both our little girls with us, so it was a family affair for the night.

So I decided that after dinner I would like to bowl some, so got Jennifer to drop me off at Galaxy Bowling Center, which is just 10 minutes from Jaime’s house. I left the mobile with Jennifer since she had the kids with her, got my gear out of the car and and when inside.

As it turned out, it was $10 all you can bowl. I got there at about 9pm and proceeded to bowl 6 games. Here is where the weekend started to take a turn for the worse! LOL!

I finished up bowling at around 10.40pm. After packing up my bag and freshening up a little, I realized I didn’t know Jaime’s mobile number (or her house number for that matter) off the top of my head and the center wouldn’t allow me to call my mobile since it was an out of town number. So, I walked down the road to a local gas station and asked to use the phone and tried to call Jennifer on the mobile. I tried calling twice and got the answering service both times. I quickly said thank you and went back to the bowling center.

I asked for a phone book, looked up Jaime’s home number and proceeded to call it. No answer. By now, it was about 11pm. I decided to sit outside for a little bit in the hopes that Jennifer would see the missed call and come down. After sitting out there for some 30 minutes, I went back in and tried to call Jaime’s house number again and got the same result.

It was now 11.45pm, so I called a cab to take me back to Jaime’s house. After a 10 minute wait the cab arrived, I got in and told him where to go. We got about 2 or 3 miles down the road and I saw Jennifer drive past! LOL! I asked the driver to turn around and follow her. He offered me his phone so I could call her and tell her we were behind her. We pulled into a local shopping center car park and I got out. That short trip cost me $20!!! LOL!

We ran a couple quick errands (I’d forgotten to pack diapers, formula and water for Hayden) and headed back to Jaime’s. By the time we got to sleep it was almost 2am and we had to be up at around 7am to be out the door by about 8am so we could get to Newport by 10am.

We managed to get on the road by 8.15am. We were making GREAT time and were gonna get there pretty much on time for the clinic. At about 40 miles out from Newport, an alert light came on in the car saying we were losing oil pressure. So, we pulled off the Interstate, let the car cool down some and put a quart of oil in the car. After a 15 minute stop, we decided to get back on the road.

After any 8 miles or so, we started to notice a loud whirring noise and it sounded like that car needed to shift into another gear and couldn’t. So, once again, we decided to pull off the Interstate and let the car rest, in Walton, KY. The second we stopped at the top of the off ramp, the whirring became a loud knocking noise and we knew we were in trouble.

Fortunately, there was a gas station just a couple hundred feet away, so we crawled there parked the car and proceeded to panic for a few minutes! LOL!

After a little discussion, we decided we would rent a car and continue to Newport. We were only 20 minutes or so away, so we might as well make the most of it and we’d figure out what to do with the car later on in the day. After a few phone calls, we had organized someone from Hazard to come and tow the car back to Hazard the following day and had someone from Enterprise Car Rentals come and pick us up. We packed the kids in the back of the car and climbed in. 10 minutes down the road, we reached the office, where Jennifer’s flip-flops broke as she climbed out of the car. We quickly got through all the paper work, signed the contract and were on our way again.

After a quick stop at our car to get the rest of our stuff, we headed for Newport and FINALLY got in at about 12.30pm. Almost three hours behind schedule! LOL! As soon as we put the car in park, Lilyana proceeded to vomit on herself! LOL! We quickly cleaned her up and changed both girls diapers. Jennifer told me to head on in and make the most of the rest of the day’s session, while she proceeded to the local shops to buy clean clothes for Lily (you’d think we’d remember to bring an extra set, since she vomits on herself every other trip, pretty much).

I headed in and after a quick chat with Rick and Josh Hitt, the people running the clinic, I got myself situated and got to bowling. FINALLY!!

After the days session, we packed up the kids and headed back to Richmond. We were originally planning on staying in Newport, but given the unexpected costs, we had decided it would be best to drive back to Richmond and come back the following day.

Once again, we didn’t sleep to well got up at 7am and headed out the door. Unfortunately, even though we got out of Jaime’s at about 8.30am, we stopped to get some breakfast and it was so packed we decided to try somewhere else. By the time we’d got breakfast and fueled up, it was now 9am and we were still in Lexington! LOL! LATE AGAIN! We called the towing company in Hazard and due to family tragedy, they were no longer able to come get our car for us. So we made a few more calls and began trying to organize a way to get the car to Jaime’s house, at least.

After an hours driving and just 15-20 minutes out from Newport, traffic came to a grinding halt. We thought there was a wreck ahead, but it turns out there was scheduled road work going on and since we weren’t local, we knew nothing about it!

We sat in gridlock for almost 90 minutes and decided to take the next exit when it came up and figure out how to get there using Google Maps on my phone. We got a little lost to start with, but soon figured out where we had to go and 20 minutes later were once again at the bowling center… this time, two hours late. Once again, Jennifer told me to head on in and make the most of the session. We both said “Well, unless we get run over, or someone hits us, it can’t get any worse”. Yeah, we were wrong!

While I was inside the bowling center, Jennifer stepped out of the car to make a phone call to her aunt with the keys in the car, car running and both kids still in the car. No sooner had she stepped out of the car, Lilyana pulled the door closed behind her and locked the door! LOL! She managed to lock herself in the car. At least the car was running and the A/C was on, because it had to be AT LEAST 90°F outside.

As it turned out, some 10 minutes later, we broke for lunch in the clinic and I noticed Jennifer hadn’t come in yet so went to see what was going on to find an annoyed and slightly panicked wife trying to figure out how to get Lilyana to open the car door.

We tried getting her to push the “Unlock” buttons on the doors and the car keys. We tried to get her to pull the locks up herself. We tried to get her to push the “Open Trunk” button in the hopes that we might be able to get in the car that way. In all our attempts, Lily would just fondle the button, or press beside it or above the buttons, while intermittently taking a bite of her McD’s Hashbrown! Every now and then she would start laughing, until she realized we were getting mad then she started crying! Finally, after almost 15 minutes of trying, we were just about ready to call the Police to come help and we heard the locks pop! Lilyana finally decided to pull the lock up properly. I reached in and pulled Lilyana out of the car, gave her a big hug and a kiss because she locked terrified! LOL! Thankfully, Hayden had just been fed before all of this went down, so she blissfully snoozed through the whole incident! HAHA! We quickly pulled the keys out so this whole scenario wouldn’t be repeated.

Jennifer told me to head back in and she would follow shortly with the kids. While we were inside, we got a call from Jennifer’s Aunt Marilyn telling us her boyfriend, Johnny was on his way with a trailer to haul the car back to Hazard. What’s more, since he was driving a large truck, there was a good chance we might be able to ride back to Hazard with him! FINALLY! Some good news!

So, I finished up the clinic and as we were doing so, Marilyn called again to tell us Johnny was on the road and would be there as soon as he could. Knowing it was going to be at least 3 hours before he got to Walton, we decided we would bowl a few games and head out from Newport at about 6.30pm. This gave Jennifer a chance to try out her new ball and work on a few things while she was at it.

At 6.30, we left the bowling center. We got to Walton at about 7pm to see Johnny sitting in the car park already! LOL! We loaded up the car and decided to get a little something to eat before we got on the road again.

We had organized with Jaime to get her and her eldest son, Christopher, to bring the rental car back to Florence for us. We stopped at Jaime’s to get the gear we had left there and drop the rental to her. On our way to do that, Lilyana had decided she didn’t like the seat belt and climbed out of it, only to fly into the back of my seat when we had to stop really quickly. Basically, from there until we got home, the trip was smooth sailing. Lilyana forced us to stop a couple of times, because she just kept screaming, but there were no more incidents. No more dramas. No more torture! LOL!

This weekend has been a lesson in patience, communication and coping on the fly. If we never go through ANYTHING like this again, we’ll be forever grateful!!!

This past weekend has arguably been the worst weekend of my life!
