It’s been a year already…

Midday yesterday marked the anniversary of our arrival here in KY and what an eventful year its been. I’ve been through several contracts.  Some lucrative, some not so lucrative. My first child (hopefully not the last) was born. Our car has broken down a half dozen times, as well as a computer crapping out completely.

Things got off to a flying start (no pun intended), so I felt really optimistic about what the year would hold for us. We landed in LA on May 3rd, 2008, arrived in Lexington on May 4th and I landed my first contract, and by far the most lucrative of my stay here, in June for Where I’ve Been, LLC in Chicago, IL.  Four months and $12.5k later, I was dropped with no notice due to “budget problems.”

About a month after I started working for Where I’ve Been, Lilyana was born (2:12pm, June 29 2008 to be exact) and what a day that was!  LOL! I was woken at 8am by my wife running, yes, running down the corridor because her water had broken.  An hour later we were on our way to the hospital.  Serious labour started an hour later and Lilyana was born some four hours later!  24 hours later we were allowed to go home. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the sight of my daughter emerging. Nor will I forget the image of my mother in-law, Cindy, bouncing up and down in the corner of the room like a hyper active little girl.  Lilyana is now 10 months, 6 days old and she’s grown up so much already. She’s stubborn, independent (as much as a 10 month old can be that is) and is so close to walking its not funny.

A month after being laid off by Where I’ve Been, I was picked up by Adapia, Inc. in San Francisco, CA. I worked for them for about three months and some $4.2k later, things went belly up within the business itself and once again I was left unemployed.  Since then, I’ve been working small contracts trying to make ends meet.

One of the more depressing aspects of this last year, is that we’ve not been able to get our own place because the finances just haven’t been there.  What’s worse, is that we haven’t been able to pay my bills back in NZ, so they’re falling WAY behind.  The downside to this, is that if we decide to head home anytime soon, my credit will be so bad that we won’t be able to get financing for anything.  This prospect scares me to death, but it’s something we’ll have to deal with when we get there.

One of the few positives that came out of this year is the discovery that I’m actually quite a proficient bowler, which is handy in a country that pays elite bowlers very well, so I have something to work towards and hopefully I’ll be able to make some decent money bowling.

This year has been by far one of the most challenging years of my life.  My marriage was tested, my patience was tested as was my emotional and psychological state. I can say with absolute certainty that I’m glad this year is over. I’m looking forward to seeing what this year has to hold for me and my family.  There are things in motion at the moment that are looking very good for us, my hope is that all these things materialise.  Here’s hoping huh…
