All credit for the system and its application goes to Mo Pinel, President, Co-owner and Ball designer for Morich Enterprises.

For those that don’t know anything about this particular system, it basically breaks a layout down in to three parts:

The Drilling Angle

The Pin to Positive Axis Point (Pin-to-PAP) distance

The VAL angle

Each part of the layout has it’s own affect on the final ball motion, so all three components are equally important. A poor choice in one component could completely destroy the intent of the layout.

The Drilling Angle

The Drilling Angle is found by measuring the angle formed by a line from the Pin to the PSA, in asymmetric balls, or a from the Pin through Center of Gravity on symmetric balls and the line created by the Pin to the PAP.

The size of this angle determines how soon the ball starts to transition from skid to hook. This is known as the first transition. In a nutshell, the drilling angle is an indicator of length.

In the guidelines set down by Mr. Pinel, he recommends drilling angles be no less than 10° and no more than 90°. The higher the drilling angle, the more skid you get, the further down lane the ball gets before it starts to hook. The lower the drilling angle, the sooner the ball starts to hook.

Pin to PAP

The Pin to PAP distance (or Pin Length, Pin Distance, or simply, Pin) dictates how much flare the ball will have as it travels down the lane. The more the ball flares, the more fresh parts of the surface contacts the lane, the more the ball ultimately hooks.

Flare potential, or how much built in flare the ball is capable of, is dictated by the Total Differential of the undrilled ball. The higher the total differential (up to 0.060″ as set by the USBC), the higher the flare potential. The lower the total differential, the lower the flare potential.

The Pin distance determines how much of that flare potential we use. We may use pin distances ranging from 3/4″ to 6″, with maximum flare being attained with a pin distance of 3-3/8″.

VAL Angle

The angle to the VAL is found by measuring the angle formed between the VAL and the line from the PAP to the Pin locator.

The size of this angle determines how quickly the ball will transition from hook to roll. This is known as the second transition.

In the guidelines set down by Mr. Pinel, he recommends VAL angles be no less than 20° and no more than 70°.

Summary

Hopefully, this basic introduction gives you enough information to at least know what the numbers of the Dual Angle Layout Technique mean and how to interpret them.
